Getting the most out of a traineeship or apprenticeship
The following tips have been put together to ensure that you get the most out of the Australian Apprenticeship and traineeship system.
Induction
Make sure you:
- Understand your work expectations and training responsibilities.
- Have undertaken occupational health and safety training specific to your workplace.
- Have been informed about wages and employment conditions including hours worked, starting and finishing times, lunch and rest breaks, overtime and leave entitlements.
- Have been introduced and welcomed into the workplace.
- Understand the importance your role is to the success of the business.
- Have been provided with the necessary equipment to perform your job effectively.
- Have undertaken a workplace tour which includes the location of the lunch room, toilets, parking and any other key facilities.
Supervision & monitoring:
You are required to have a supervisor who has the appropriate skills, experience (2 years minimum) or qualifications necessary to support your Apprenticeship or traineeship throughout your training.
The supervisor obligations:
- Provide ongoing mentoring and encouragement.
- Communicate clearly and effectively, which includes listening to any problems or concerns the Australian Apprentice or trainee may have.
- Work closely with the training provider to ensure the required competencies are being attained.
- Offer ongoing training support, assistance and feedback.
- Provide appropriate levels of supervision and training.
- Examples include:
- Ensuring that your Australian Apprentice or trainee has input into the training process.
- Explaining how and why a specific training competency is important.
- Allocating specific time for training to be undertaken (e.g. weekly basis).
- Providing variety in training in order to maintain the employee
