Getting the most out of a traineeship or apprenticeship

The following tips have been put together to ensure that you get the most out of the Australian Apprenticeship and traineeship system.

Induction

Make sure you:

  • Understand your work expectations and training responsibilities.
  • Have undertaken occupational health and safety training specific to your workplace.
  • Have been informed about wages and employment conditions including hours worked, starting and finishing times, lunch and rest breaks, overtime and leave entitlements.
  • Have been introduced and welcomed into the workplace.
  • Understand the importance your role is to the success of the business.
  • Have been provided with the necessary equipment to perform your job effectively.
  • Have undertaken a workplace tour which includes the location of the lunch room, toilets, parking and any other key facilities.

Supervision & monitoring:

You are required to have a supervisor who has the appropriate skills, experience (2 years minimum) or qualifications necessary to support your Apprenticeship or traineeship throughout your training.

The supervisor obligations:

  • Provide ongoing mentoring and encouragement.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, which includes listening to any problems or concerns the Australian Apprentice or trainee may have.
  • Work closely with the training provider to ensure the required competencies are being attained.
  • Offer ongoing training support, assistance and feedback.
  • Provide appropriate levels of supervision and training.
  • Examples include:
    • Ensuring that your Australian Apprentice or trainee has input into the training process.
    • Explaining how and why a specific training competency is important.
    • Allocating specific time for training to be undertaken (e.g. weekly basis).
    • Providing variety in training in order to maintain the employee
