Nine local job seekers are one step closer to a career in the construction industry after successfully graduating from the Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) program in Laidley, completing a 20-week paid traineeship and earning a Certificate I in Construction.
Delivered by BUSY At Work through the Queensland Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative, the program equipped participants with practical construction experience, nationally recognised training, and the confidence to take the next step towards employment.
Hosted at the Laidley RSL Sub Branch, participants spent 20 weeks developing practical construction skills, learning workplace safety requirements, and gaining valuable insight into the industry. Graduates will now be supported to explore employment opportunities, apprenticeships, and further training pathways with local construction employers.
As a gesture of appreciation to the Laidley RSL for hosting the program, participants worked alongside Registered Training Organisation Ever Thought to design and build a handcrafted timber picnic table with integrated seating. The completed project has been donated to the RSL, leaving a lasting contribution to the local community and showcasing the skills developed throughout the program.

Building Skills, Confidence and Connections
For participant Ky, the program provided an ideal introduction to the construction industry.
“It’s an entryway into the construction industry. We’ve been learning how to work safely and develop the skills needed to get started in the industry.”
Beyond gaining practical trade skills, participants built strong friendships and developed a supportive team environment.
Amber said the sense of camaraderie became one of the most rewarding aspects of the experience.
“Making all the new friends and working together as a group has been great. We’ve become like a little family and always try to help each other out when we need to.”
Ky also reflected on the personal growth demonstrated by the cohort.
“I think everyone’s grown and gained more confidence in themselves and their abilities.”
Creating New Opportunities
For many participants, the program represented an opportunity to reset their career goals and gain new qualifications.
After spending six months looking for work, Nakieta learned about the program through her employment caseworker and decided to apply.
“The goal is to gain skills and qualifications. You come in, learn from experienced trainers, and get exposure to a range of different activities.”
Nakieta has already set ambitious goals for her future within the construction industry.
“I want to eventually run my own company. First, I want to gain as many qualifications as I can and then provide opportunities for young apprentices, just like the opportunity I’ve been given.”
Program Mentor Daniel praised the commitment and enthusiasm shown by the participants throughout the traineeship.
“We’ve had a fantastic group of trainees. Their dedication and willingness to learn has been great to see.”
He also highlighted Nakieta’s strong motivation to continue developing her skills and qualifications within the industry.
A Strong Foundation for Future Success
The program has provided graduates with the practical experience, industry knowledge, and qualifications needed to pursue apprenticeships, traineeships, and entry-level employment opportunities within the construction sector.
Reflecting on his future aspirations, Ky shared:
“I want to be in the construction industry, and I want to do it right. I want to make a real impact.”
Both Ky and Nakieta encouraged others who may be considering the program to take the opportunity.
