Australian Apprenticeships Ambassador takes silver at WorldSkills competition

Section waiter Jessica Martin has taken home a silver medal from the WorldSkills International Competition.

Section waiter Jessica Martin can now add WorldSkills medalist to her list of achievements, with the Australian Apprenticeships Ambassador taking the silver medal in Restaurant Service at the WorldSkills International Competition in Germany.

Martin was part of a team of 31 ‘Skillaroos’ who competed against 1,000 other people from 61 countries from July 2-7.

The 21-year-old completed an Australian Apprenticeship in the hospitality industry, graduating with a Diploma of Events Management and an Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management.

The Skillaroo’s love for restaurant service and fine dining came as a result of watching her father’s hospitality businesses.

“My dad is a chef of 40 years and being around family-owned food service businesses opened my eyes to the wide variety of careers that exist in hospitality,” Jessica said

She currently works as a section waiter at Sydney’s renowned Momofuku Seiobo, which is ranked in the top 100 restaurants in the world.

Martin says that the WorldSkills experience has been “fantastic”.

“Not many people get the opportunity to represent their country – doing something they are passionate about,” she said.

Martin said that an Australian Apprenticeship is the “best way” to start in your career, with high schoolers able to begin school-based apprenticeships in their senior years.
