Baxter went from playing video games at home every day to working as an assistant manager!

In 2020, Baxter found out about BUSY At Work’s Transition to Work program which supports young people aged 15-24 with intensive support to find work. When you are young and just left school, it is extremely difficult to get your first ‘foot in the door’ and this is where the program helps.

The Transition to Work program is an Australian Government initiative and aims to assist young people aged 15-24 who are finding it difficult to find work after leaving school. A no-cost service, the program helps young people overcome barriers, build their resume, connect to work experiences, and go onto work or further vocational study.

Despite some disruptions to the program due to COVID, Baxter learnt useful skills, such as how to improve his resume and preparing for interviews by learning how to better present himself when meeting with employers. Baxter’s employment consultants at BUSY At Work sent in applications for any job Baxter was interested in and eventually he was successful in gaining a casual position as Sandwich Artist at Subway Noosa Junction. A short five to six months later, he was then promoted to Assistant Manager, turning permanent part-time. Baxter is thriving in the role and enjoying the extra responsibility.

Baxter now hopes to be promoted to Manager of the Noosa Junction store, something he never dreamt of achieving before joining the Transition to Work program. This experience has helped him gain more confidence in the workplace and he is now thriving professionally and socially.

“I recommend BUSY At Work to all of my friends who are struggling to find work. They are always happy to help out and are actually interested in finding you a job,” said Baxter.

The Transition to Work team continued to support Baxter even after attaining his position at Subway. They helped him get to work when he first started and are always there to answer his calls if he needs help.

Managing Director of BUSY At Work, Paul Miles, said, “We are really thrilled with Baxter’s progress and pleased that our Transition to Work program has encouraged him in his career ambitions. Transition to Work is a highly successful program that gets real results for young people needing to bridge the gap from school and into work.”
