Businesses urged to make a Queensland Apprenticeship Pledge

The State Government has launched the Queensland Apprenticeship Pledge, an exciting new initiative that aims to drive the creation of additional apprenticeship opportunities.

The Queensland Apprenticeship Pledge supports the Queensland Government’s $86 million commitment to create 10,000 additional apprenticeships over six years.

Under the Queensland Apprenticeship Pledge, the government has asked industry to commit to providing additional apprenticeship opportunities to further develop a strong skills base for the state’s economy.

In return eligible employers who sign up to the program will be paid an incentive of up to $6000 for each additional apprentice they take on above their benchmark.

BUSY At Work CEO, Paul Miles said this was another great initiative from the Queensland Government to help employers take on more Apprentices.

“Not only will this encourage businesses to invest in their workforces, but it will provide even more opportunities for jobseekers to access a pathway that can give them a long term sustainable career”.

It also builds on the success of two other initiatives implemented under the Queensland Government’s Great skills Real opportunities training reform action plan – the School to Trade Pathway Incentive program and the Group Training Additional Apprentice Bonus.

The government invites individual employers, including employers who do not currently have apprentices, to ‘make a pledge’ to employ additional apprentices.

Eligible employers can receive an incentive of up to $6,000 for each additional apprentice they employ and retain.

Only employers that make a pledge are eligible to receive the incentive payments up to the number of additional apprentices pledged.

How much are the Payments and when are they paid?

The incentives are paid in two stages:

$4000 paid in October 2015 and;
$2000 paid in October 2016.

The incentive will apply to eligible apprenticeships commenced from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015.

Employer benchmarks are based on additional apprentices employed and retained compared to a baseline as at 30 June 2014 (excluding school-based apprentices and apprentice re-commencements).
