Construction underway at 1 William Street

Construction is officially underway on Queensland’s largest commercial property development – the 1 William Street tower.

Deputy premier Jeff Seeney and minister for trade Tim Nicholls said the turning of the first sod yesterday (March 4) was a milestone for the project and a major boon for Queensland.

“More than 1,000 direct jobs per year will be required on site as the development proceeds, which will also have a positive impact on indirect jobs and the overall economy,” Mr Nicholls commented.

“At present, between consultants and the main contractor, there are more than 200 people working on the early stages of the project.”

With the development expected to create thousands of jobs for Queenslanders, it may also boost opportunities for apprenticeship in Brisbane over the course of the building’s construction.

Mr Seeney said the tower will transform 1 William Street from a dusty car park to a thriving commercial hub, which will be home to the Queensland Public Service.

Due for completion in 2016, the lion’s share of construction work on the project will be undertaken over the coming ten months, the deputy premier added.
