Five-year training sector plan for Queensland takes action

More incentives for apprentices have been introduced with the Queensland government's new five-year training sector plan.

Those pursuing apprenticeships in Queensland and other training initiatives are set to benefit from the state government’s five-year action plan, Great Skills. Real Opportunities, which came into effect yesterday (July 1).

The action plan aims to revitalise Queensland’s vocational training (VET) sector, with reforms including an investment of $86 million over six years to create an extra 10,000 apprentice and trainee commencements.

This is in addition to improving apprenticeship and traineeship arrangements to make it easier to move interstate or change employer.

“The plan is an adrenalin shot for the training industry – making training more accessible for all Queenslanders and ensuring it is cost effective and in-line with industry needs,” said minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek.

Mr Langbroek added that reforming the VET sector will help increase participation in the workforce and boost productivity.

Assistant minister for Technical and Further Education Saxon Rice said that the School to Trade Pathway incentive is also now in effect

“The School to Trade Pathway incentive provides employers with up to $5,000 to commence a school-based apprentice and keep them in a full-time apprenticeship on completion of schooling,” Mrs Rice said.
