Fifteen year old Hayden Delisser knows what it’s like to work around power tools and seeing things being constructed from timber.

Having just completed Year 10 at St Patrick’s College in Gympie, Hayden is ready to continue in the family tradition having signed up as a fourth generation apprentice carpenter in his dad’s home building and renovation business.

Hayden is enthusiastic at the prospect of following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and already has a growing understanding of what it takes to be a success in the building industry.

“It’s been a natural progression for me. Growing up I was used to seeing dad working with tools. I’ve dabbled in a bit of carpentry at school and at home and always enjoyed working with my hands.”

“Dad has always said I can follow my own career path but in the end I knew I wanted to give carpentry a go,” Hayden said.

Having commenced his Certificate III in Carpentry just last month, the school-based apprentice expects to be spending a lot of time in his dad’s business over the Christmas holiday period.

BUSY At Work Industry Training Consultant, Gympie Kerry Donaldson said it was wonderful to see someone so young excited to be working and studying in the family business.

“Hayden already has a good grounding in what he wants to achieve in life and it is fantastic that he has the full support of his extended family who have set a wonderful example for him to follow.”

“Four generations working in the same field means the business will stay in the family which is not only great for Hayden but for Gympie as a whole,” Ms Donaldson said.

Following the school holidays, as part of his apprenticeship, Hayden will continue to work one full day a week in the business while completing his Year 11 and 12 studies.
St Patrick’s College School Guidance Officer, Mark Jabore was delighted to see Hayden begin his carpentry apprenticeship.

“Hayden has shown a new maturity this year as he has progressed on his journey. He has really started to focus on his future and what his dad has offered him.”

“We are keen to see him make the most of this opportunity and believe he has an excellent career ahead of him.”

“Also we would like to thank Work Placement Officer, Maree McNaught for her contribution in smoothly facilitating Hayden’s transition into his school-based apprenticeship on behalf of the College community,” Mr Jabore said.

As part of his initial training Hayden will be learning about the safe use of hand and power tools such as drills, mitre saws and power saws. As he progresses through his apprenticeship he will be able to construct and install timber or metal frameworks for residential and commercial buildings.

Hayden’s dad, Stephen said he was very thankful for the support he had received from BUSY At Work.

“They were very prompt and efficient and made the signing up process very easy for us,” Mr Delisser said.

BUSY At Work, CEO Paul Miles said BUSY was excited to see young people like Hayden following in the footsteps of previous generations.

“We are pleased that Hayden has commenced his school-based apprenticeship which will allow him to earn an income while completing a nationally recognised qualification.”

“Hayden’s extended family have been wonderful role models for him and set a fine example for him to follow. I am looking forward to following Hayden’s career and wish him all the success for the future,” Mr Miles said.
