Kevin’s Corner project expected to generate thousands of jobs

Kevin’s Corner coal mine, located 160 kilometres west of Emerald in the Galilee Basin, has been given the green light by the coordinator-general in a boost to Queensland’s economic development.

The $4.2 million project proposes a combined underground and open-cut coal mine with an ultimate capacity of 30 million tonnes per annum.

The key features of the Kevin’s Corner project include two open-cut coal mines, three underground mine areas, a mine infrastructure area, coal handling and preparation facilities, a light industrial area, an on-site accommodation village for around 2,000 employees, and an on-site airstrip with a 2.5km runway.

Deputy premier and minister for state development, infrastructure and planning Jeff Seeney said that the mining project would generate around 1,800 construction and 1,600 operational jobs.

“The flow on benefits for the state’s economy from this project will be massive. It means billions of dollars in capital investment and thousands of jobs for Queensland,” Mr Seeney said.

This project could present opportunities for apprenticeships in Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton and the Surat Basin, as well as general labour hire in Queensland.

“The proponent has committed to maximising local employment over the life of the project as well as implementing local training strategies that also support critical non-mining activity,” Mr Seeney added.
