More hotels needed in Brisbane

Opportunities for apprenticeships in Brisbane could receive a welcome boost, after the state government announced it supports a major hotel development in the CBD.

Speaking at the Guide to Hotel Investment forum today (March 12), tourism minister Jann Stuckey said the delivery of a new hotel in the state’s capital is vital to meet increased demand on the city’s tourism and business sectors.

The minister said recent data suggests an additional 300 to 400 rooms need to be developed in Brisbane annually to ensure the city remains an esteemed conference and corporate destination.

“An increase in the number of hotel rooms in Brisbane is part of the Newman government’s strategy to double revenue from tourism by 2020,” Ms Stuckey said, adding that more hotel beds in Brisbane’s CBD are required to achieve this.

Brisbane’s reputation as a world-class city continues to grow, the minister said, with international visitor figures showing an eight per cent increase in the total number of tourists to the capital in 2012.

Ms Stuckey’s comments come after Echo Entertainment announced last month that it is assessing locations in Queensland for the development of a $1.3 billion integrated resort with 500 hotel rooms, restaurants, bars, gambling venues and retail outlets.
