Work begins on Lockyer Valley Aquatic Centre

A brand new state-of-the-art aquatic centre is set to delight Lockyer Valley residents, with the regional council entering into negotiations with Douglas Construction and Engineering for the $11.9 million project.

The Lockyer Valley Aquatic Centre will be built next to the Gatton Sports Centre and will feature a 10-lane Olympic-sized swimming pool, a clubhouse/control room, a learn-to-swim pool for kids and an amenities block.

“This aquatic centre will be an outstanding facility and a welcome addition to the Lockyer Valley community,” Mr Dickson said.

“Hopefully the new facility will encourage more locals to take up swimming and spend more time being active enjoying sport and getting exercise.”

Mayor Steve Jones commented that given the quality of previous projects handled by Douglas Construction – such as the Australian Institute of Sport pool and the Ian Thorpe Centre – he is confident the community will have a “first-class facility”.

The project is expected to take 12 months to complete and may create opportunities for traineeships and apprenticeships in Toowoomba.

The existing pool in Gatton will remain open until construction on the new facility is complete.
