Do you have a business idea? Or perhaps you have a start-up business and need some help to make it viable? BUSY At Work, contracted by the Australian Government’s Workforce Australia, delivers the fully-funded Self-Employment Assistance Program. This no-cost program provides support to develop or grow your business through 12 months of personalised coaching, accredited training, workshops, and financial assistance.

How Can Self Employment Assistance Help?

Self-Employment Assistance can help you start and run a small business by helping you to:
  • Learn about and consider being self-employed
  • Decide on a business idea and check if it will work
  • Develop a business plan
  • Get a business up and running or adjust your own business to keep it viable.
Eligibility Criteria
  • at least 18 years of age,
  • not be an undischarged bankrupt,
  • an Australian citizen or have working rights in Australia.

What Self-Employment Assistance Offers

Self-Employment Assistance offers six NO-COST services. You can do them all or only select the ones you want to do.

Exploring Self-Employment Workshops

Join our NO-COST interactive workshop, delivered by experienced business owners, and discover what it takes to start and run a successful small business. Designed to help you explore self-employment and test your business ideas, this workshop is an ideal first step toward entrepreneurship. What you’ll learn:
  • The essentials of starting and managing a business
  • Marketing, social media, research, and legal basics
  • How to develop a strong business idea and bring it to market

Small Business Training

Gain the essential skills to start and run a successful small business with our FREE accredited training. Choose from flexible options, including shorter skill sets or a comprehensive Certificate III or IV in Entrepreneurship and New Business, tailored to suit your business journey.

Micro Business Skill Set

This accredited eight-week online course, guided by an experienced trainer, provides participants with an introductory overview of the essential skills and knowledge needed to explore and plan the development of a new micro business.

Participants will learn how to: Investigate business opportunities and research and develop effective business plans.

New Business Venture Skill Set

This accredited eight-week online course, guided by an experienced trainer, provides participants with the skills and knowledge to take the next step in launching their small business by investigating business opportunities, developing and presenting business proposals, organising finances for new business ventures, and delivering and monitoring service to customers.

Business Plan Development 

Take your business to the next level with expert support! Get assistance with a tailored, business plan that outlines strategies for success and forecasts your cash flow for the next two years. With one-on-one guidance and support from an experienced business mentor, you’ll gain the clarity and direction you need. Once complete, your Self-Employment Assistance provider will assess the viability, and if successful, you could secure a place in our 12-month Small Business Coaching program.
Need some bite-sized advice?
Business Advice Sessions Get targeted guidance for your business idea or venture with up to two one-hour sessions per year. Business Health Checks Assess and improve your business with a comprehensive three-hour review, available once a year.

Small Business Coaching

Unlock your business potential with personalised mentoring over 12 months! Throughout the year, you’ll be paired with a dedicated business mentor who will guide you, provide expert coaching, and offer ongoing support to help you thrive.

As part of the program, you’ll receive:

  • $300 reimbursement for eligible business expenses (such as insurance)
  • Self-Employment Allowance for up to 39 weeks (if eligible)
  • Self-Employment Rental Assistance for up to 26 weeks (if eligible)
