Thanks to receiving an Early Childhood Scholarship through the Victorian Government, Sayde is now achieving her career dreams. BUSY At Work, who manage the scholarship program, sat down with Sayde to talk about her experience and career aspirations.
Can you share a little about your background before receiving the scholarship?
Prior to receiving the incentive I had completed a diploma and qualified in early childhood. My dream was to be a kinder teacher and support children to transition to school as I am a big believer in inclusion for all children, not only from diverse backgrounds but in different learning abilities and having the right to access education.
How did receiving this scholarship change your life and your opportunities regarding studying to become an ECT?
Receiving the incentive was a game changer for me not only in my financial situation but having the opportunity to chase my dreams and become an ECT and being able to afford the costs of studying as I am a mother of three. I was able to achieve my dream and goals of being an Early Childhood Teacher.
What challenges did you face before or during your role as an ECT, and how did you overcome them?
Shifting from working with infants for ten years to working with kinder children was a learning challenge for how to program and build a trusting relationship with the children at the age of four in comparison to an infant. To overcome this challenge, I observed children’s interests and play. In doing this I ensured my environment was safe, secure and child led. Since then I have become more confident in this part of my personal growth.
What skills or experiences did you gain as a Scholarship recipient?
As a recipient under the ECT program, I gained both academic and personal growth that has significantly shaped my professional identity. Academically, I developed a deep understanding of early childhood development, inclusive education, and evidence-based teaching strategies. I also strengthened my ability to plan, implement, and reflect on learning experiences that support diverse children’s developmental needs. On a personal level, the program helped me build resilience, confidence, and a strong sense of purpose. I improved my communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills through collaborative projects, professional placements, and ongoing reflection. Working with children with developmental delays and disabilities further deepened my empathy and commitment to advocating for inclusive practices. Overall, the experience empowered me to become a reflective, compassionate, and knowledgeable early childhood professional.
Did you participate in any extracurricular activities, leadership roles, or community projects during your Scholarship?
Yes, I registered with Semaan and Slattery, Coaching and mentoring program through the Department of Education and Training, and have also undertaken school readiness programs etc.
How has the Scholarship influenced your future career plans?
Receiving the scholarship was a turning point that affirmed my passion for early childhood education and gave me the confidence to pursue a meaningful career in this field. It not only supported me financially but also motivated me to excel academically and seek out opportunities to make a real difference in the lives of children and families. The experience has inspired me to take my career beyond traditional teaching. I am continuing to work as an Early Childhood Teacher.
What is your favourite memory from your study and/or employment journey as a Scholarship recipient?
Graduating was a very special moment for me as this really brought home how hard I studied and the difference I will be making in children’s lives and education.
Is there a person (mentor, teacher, friend) who played a significant role in your success?
My family and my mentor were a great support as they helped build my confidence and gave me strength when things were challenging.
How did you find the communication and support provided by BUSY At Work?

What message would you like to share with the Scholarship program funders?
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the program funders for their generous support. The scholarship had a significant impact on both my academic journey and personal growth. It eased financial pressures and allowed me to focus fully on my studies and professional development.
