Supporting employers, apprentices and Australia’s future skills
During this week’s budget announcement, the Australian Government announced changes to the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System, taking effect from 1 January 2027.
While some settings are evolving, the overall direction is a more targeted system designed to strengthen workforce growth in priority industries and support employers who need it most.
At BUSY At Work, our focus is in helping you understand the changes early, so you can make confident decisions.
What’s really changing (and why it matters)
Rather than a broad incentive model, the system is moving toward targeted investment which includes:
1. A sharper focus on small and medium businesses
From 2027, employer incentives will apply to businesses with fewer than 200 employees, ensuring support is directed to organisations where it can have the most impact.
This provides more meaningful support for SMEs, and a clearer pathway for workforce growth for these businesses.
2. Incentives will remain but have been refined
- Key Apprenticeship Program incentive will be up to $4,000, paid in year one (previously $5000)
- Priority Hiring Incentive remains up to $2,500
While the structure is evolving, incentives remain a strong part of the system, particularly for early-stage apprenticeship support.
3. A stronger link to skills shortages
The Priority List will be updated using better data and longer-term trends, with focus on:
- construction and housing
- clean energy
- manufacturing
- care and support sectors
Apprenticeships will be more closely aligned to real workforce demand, helping employers invest with greater confidence.

What hasn’t changed (and why that matters)
Your current apprentices continue with their incentives
Any apprenticeship starting before 1 January 2027 will continue under the current incentive arrangements.
Strong apprentice support continues
The broader system remains well supported, including:
- Up to $10,000 in apprentice incentives in priority areas
- Disability Australian Apprentice Wage Support
- Living Away From Home Allowance
- Interest-free loans with completion discounts
