Finding yourself out of work all of a sudden can be a traumatic experience for most people but for Cairns based resident Adam Pocock it has been an opportunity to learn new skills and secure a fulltime job with a progressive local company.

A member of CoAct, BUSY At Work provides assistance to job seekers to help with their pathway to employment through the Australian Government’s jobactive Employment Services.

CoAct BUSY At Work Employment Consultant, Jessica Campbell said Adam had shown great determination and resilience to secure work after being made redundant from a position he had worked in for five years.

“Adam came to us after suddenly losing his job with a local power company. The case manager and I worked together to assist Adam with his resume writing and interviewing skills.”

“Adam had worked as a storeman and forklift driver for most of his career but had not completed any formal qualifications. We referred Adam to a local Registered Training Organisation (RTO) where he was able to complete his Certificate III in Food Processing as well as a Certificate III in Logistics.”

“Through our contacts we were able to market Adam to a storeman’s position with a confectionery company, The Distributors Cairns where Adam secured a casual job as a storeman in May this year,” Ms Campbell said.

Adam’s dream of once again returning to fulltime work became a reality when Adam was successful in gaining a fulltime position as a Warehouse Coordinator with Haymans Electrical in Cairns.

Adam said he and his wife (also a former client of BUSY) were delighted to be back in the workforce and thankful for the support provided by Smithfield’s BUSY At Work’s staff.

“We are extremely thankful to Jessica and the Case Manager Narelle for their advice and support in helping us secure long term employment.”

“The staff at BUSY are always helpful and spent a lot of time helping me with writing cover letters and ensuring my resume was up to date.”

“They saw my potential as a worker and encouraged me to complete my certificates. When I went for the interviews with The Distributors Cairns and Haymans Electrical I was a lot more confident because of the training I received through BUSY and I was able to put my best foot forward,” Mr Pocock said.

Adam said he had particularly enjoyed the five months with The Distributors Cairns but was now looking to secure his future with Hayman’s Electrical.

“I am very grateful for the regular casual work and the skills I’ve learned with The Distributors Cairns but with my previous background in the solar energy and power industry I am confident I can fit in well with the team at Hayman’s Electrical.”

BUSY At Work, CEO Paul Miles said that Adam was just one of many local job seekers who have been assisted by BUSY At Work jobactive in Cairns.

“BUSY At Work is about empowering job seekers with the skills, ability and confidence to embrace their own future as well as providing employment opportunities in a supportive environment.”

“We are delighted that Adam has overcome the challenges in his working career and secured permanent full time employment,” Mr Miles said.
