Common job interview mistakes

Dressing appropriately is an important part of the interview process.

If you are on the hunt for employment, whether it be an entry level job or career change, it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the interview process.

Job interviews can be daunting, regardless of what stage of life you are in. And despite good intentions, sometimes nerves can get the best of people and impact negatively on the outcome.

Most jobseekers will be aware of the interview basics – resume, preparation, company history and practice answers to likely questions – however, there are some common pitfalls which can be avoided with a bit of pre-planning.

Appearance and body language

What you exude on the outside is what your employer will see. While this may seem like an obvious point, appearance and body language are some of the most influential factors in an interview situation.

It is a good idea to make a concerted effort to engage in regular eye contact, and offer a smile here and there to the interviewer. Just as eye contact is important, so is body language.

Be aware of how you are sitting and how you may be viewed from an outsider’s perspective. Don’t cross your arms or hunch over in your seat.

One of the most distracting things you can do during an interview is fidget. Whether it be playing with hair or jerking a knee, fidgeting of any kind will leave an undesirable impression on your prospective employer.

It is understandable that you may be nervous, but making a conscious effort during the meeting can prevent the interviewer from feeling your anxiety.

It is important that you dress correctly for the job you are going for. If it is an office-based position, you will want to make sure you attire is adequate for this environment.
