Thanks to the Victorian Government’s Early Childhood Scholarship Program, Eka is now an Early Childhood Teacher. BUSY At Work, who manage the scholarship program, sat down with Eka to ask her about her experience.
Can you share a little about your background before receiving the scholarship?
I was working as a Certificate III educator and then completed my Diploma. If I didn’t get the incentive, I wouldn’t be able to do my Bachelor because I couldn’t afford it. Through this support, I have gained confidence, experience, and expertise, which strengthened my passion for working with children.
How did receiving this scholarship change your life and your opportunities regarding studying to become an ECT?
Receiving this scholarship made it possible for me to study and work toward becoming an ECT. It eased my financial burden, boosted my confidence, and opened up more opportunities to grow as an educator.
What challenges did you face before or during your role as an ECT, and how did you overcome them?
I struggled with balancing work, study, and family, as well as adjusting to academic expectations. I overcame these challenges by managing my time well, seeking support from mentors and colleagues, and staying focused on my goal to become an ECT.
What skills or experiences did you gain as a Scholarship recipient?
I gained stronger teaching skills, better time management, and confidence in leading and planning for children’s learning. I also developed deeper knowledge of early childhood education and built experience that prepared me to work effectively as an ECT.
Did you participate in any extracurricular activities, leadership roles, or community projects during your Scholarship?
No, I did not participate in any extracurricular activities, leadership roles, or community projects during my program term. My focus was on balancing work, study, and family commitments.
How has the Scholarship influenced your future career plans?
The scholarship helped me achieve my goal of becoming an ECT. It gave me the financial support and confidence I needed to finish my studies. Now, I am working as a fully qualified teacher and focusing on growing my skills and leadership in early childhood education.
What is your favourite memory from your study and/or employment journey as a Scholarship recipient?
My favourite memory was graduating and becoming a fully qualified teacher. It was a proud moment that reflected all my hard work and the support I received through the scholarship, which made this journey possible.
Is there a person (mentor, teacher, friend) who played a significant role in your success?
Yes, my mentor played a big role in my success. Their guidance, encouragement, and feedback helped me build confidence and stay motivated throughout my studies and teaching journey.
