Focus on Employability – Toowoomba Industry Breakfast

Over 60 key stakeholders from local businesses and Job Service Australia organisations converged at the Kingfisher Cafe on Wednesday morning to gain valuable information regarding the workplace future and development through apprenticeships and traineeships.

Queensland leader in Australian Apprenticeships and training needs, BUSY At Work conducted an employer information breakfast to share insights into the apprenticeship and traineeship needs of the region.

Guest speakers included Mike Paton CEO, Downs Industry Schools Co-Op (DISCO), Garry Wilkinson Senior Field Officer, Training Queensland and Joy Mingay Recruitment Manager, Classic Recruitment.

BUSY At Work Regional Manager, Business Relations (West Highlands), Ms Alison Welke said the purpose of the information breakfast was to highlight the apprenticeship industry.

“Our key presenters shared their methodologies to keep apprentices engaged and the importance of finding the right person for the job in the first place,”said Ms Welke.

“We had an excellent turn out and the feedback was really positive with many people coming away with new and fresh ideas of how to support their business.”

“Joy Mingay provided a comprehensive and enlightening talk on the process of how to find and attract the right candidate for your workplace. Garry Wilkinson gave an informative presentation on workforce development tools available free to a workplace including the importance of having a code of conduct and performance reviews. Mike Paton delivered a light hearted and engaging and humorous presentation on communicating with and the behaviours of Gen Y.”

“Our guests enjoyed all presentations with many commenting on Mike’s presentation on what an entertaining speaker he was,” Ms Welke said.

Mike Paton said there was a great variety of speakers during the event.

“There was something for everyone who attended today’s industry breakfast. Even as a speaker, I walked out of there today learning something new about how to run my business better.”

“It was definitely a good way to start the day,” Mr Paton said.
