Gold Coast electrical engineering centre opens

Students completing electrical engineering apprenticeships in the Gold Coast will benefit from new state-of-the-art facilities.

More than 500 students completing electrical engineering courses at the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE (GCIT) will benefit from the recently upgraded electrotechnology services at the campus.

Queensland Department of Education and Employment said the recent opening of the new facility would enable students to benefit from advanced training through the use of multiple labs, new theory classrooms and online simulation software.

Speaking in June about the $365,000 upgrade, state education, training and employment minister John-Paul Langbroek said Queensland students would be better prepared for a career in the electrotechnology field.

He commented: “The Newman government is committed to providing young apprentices and trainees with the highest quality training experiences, including access to the most up-to-date facilities, equipment and technologies.”

Electrotechnology encompasses a range electrical-related subjects including power-generation, electronic security and motors, refrigeration and telecommunications.

“I am confident that these new facilities will spark renewed interest in electrotechnology, resulting in a surge of new students,” Mr Langbroek added.

The new centre is named after an electrotechnology trainer and specialist – Richard Flanagan.
