Local Tara Business Sets Thomas on a New Career Pathway

Thomas Barlow is an enthusiastic and dedicated young man who has just recently landed a full time job as a storeman with Capalaba-based company Trade Tools.

Originally from Tara (300kms west of Brisbane) Thomas was always keen to move into the workforce but wasn’t sure of what pathway to take to help him achieve his goal.

Three years ago, like many young teenagers, Thomas was struggling to get through school and his dream of gaining full time employment seemed a long way away.

However with the support of the QGC Strengthening Local Workforces Program and Tara Rural Supplies, Thomas commenced a school-based traineeship. He attended an alternative school program three days per week and worked at Tara Rural Supplies on the other days.

Following the completion of his traineeship, obtaining a Certificate II in Retail at the end of 2013, Thomas continued working for Tara Rural Supplies gaining plenty of life experience along the way.

His dream of acquiring a full time job became a reality in October 2014 and he is now keen to begin a new chapter in his life.

Thomas was very appreciative of the support he had received from the QGC Strengthening Local Workforces Program and Tara Rural Supplies.

“The program really helped with my people skills and my ability to think on my feet. Tara Rural Supplies are a great family oriented company and they made me feel very welcome from day one. They helped me develop a good work ethic and I am very thankful for the start they gave me,” Mr Barlow said.

Tara Rural Supplies owner David Gunther said Thomas had matured a lot during his two years with the company and he was proud that Thomas had achieved his ambition of full time employment and enjoying his new life in Brisbane.

Paul Miles, CEO BUSY At Work said it was pleasing to see local employers willing to give at risk youth a chance.

“Tara Rural Supplies are a great example of how an employer can make a difference in a young person’s life. By putting in a little extra effort and providing the right training and assistance, we can provide opportunities for young people who might otherwise not see a future.”

“With the support of the QGC Strengthening Local Workforces Program and local employers we can help young people overcome challenges and set them on a career pathway for their future,” said Mr Miles.
