Celebrating a Year of Skilling Queenslanders for Work Success in 2020

To celebrate the success of the varied courses that were delivered throughout the year (including Barbering & Hairdressing, Hospitality & Tourism, Business Administration, Retail, Construction and Cooking), this week BUSY At Work hosted a special awards ceremony and morning tea to thank all those involved who helped make it a success.

“It’s been an extraordinary year with the pressures and disruption of COVID-19.  Without the commitment of our host employers and trainers, who despite everything were still committed and flexible enough to change to suit the course delivery, it wouldn’t have been possible. We thank those involved and the participants here today who were also committed enough to finish their course,” Paul Miles, Managing Director at BUSY At Work stated.

In attendance were approximately 80 course participants, as well as representatives from the host employers, referring community organisations, registered training organisations (RTOs) and Michael Kraft from the Queensland State Government Department of Employment, Small Business and Training.

Supported by host employers who provided the work experience premises and the RTOs who delivered the training during the course, participants are now equipped with valuable vocational skills, industry contacts and industry certification that can assist them to move forward into work and further qualifications through apprenticeships or traineeships.

Andrew Buchanan, Project Coordinator and Mentor from BUSY At Work for the construction course at Kilcoy Motocross said “Our cert 1 construction is a paid traineeship that was run over 22 weeks which started out with 15 trainees and out of that, we have almost two thirds of them into employment.”

Blake Little, Project Coordinator and Mentor for the Barbering & Hairdressing course, “for what has been a very challenging year for everyone these participants have managed to get out of bed and show up for work for 12 weeks straight unpaid and get there for 40 hours per week doing training and work experience. So congratulations on that.”

“The participants were very lucky to be trained by Matt O’Dougherty (from TP Barbering) who is an incredibly passionate trainer. His ability to maintain high energy throughout such a challenging time is so admirable”

“We were very lucky to secure 10 work experience employers over 10 weeks and many of our participants have now started, or will be starting, apprenticeships in the industry.”
