Stella finds her calling in pastoral care with the help of Busy Beat

Single Mum Stella knows the importance of maintaining a healthy work life balance.

Having a young son in primary school, Stella was keen to find part time work in administration or domestic roles. With little support networks in place Stella wanted to make sure that her work also allowed her to spend quality time with her son.

Stella first came to the Busy Beat hub in May 2014 seeking assistance on how to apply for vacancies online. As Stella was not registered with Centrelink or any other support agencies the hub was able to assist her with all employment related inquiries.

BUSY At Work Community Support Services Officer, Rachel Jack said Stella had been tenacious in looking for work but just needed some assistance with her online applications and applying for work that suited her interests and experience.

“Stella had previously completed a Cert IV in Pastoral Care as well as having worked in administration and real estate. We explored this qualification with her further and asked her if she had considered seeking employment as a Pastoral Care Assistant which she was very keen to know more about,” Rachel said.

After gaining some part time casual work Stella returned to the Busy Beat hub in November 2014 where she sought assistance in relation to writing cover letters and resumes.

At this time a position for a Chaplain’s role in Brisbane was brought to Stella’s attention and she was very keen to apply.

“Initially Stella had some reservations about addressing the selection criteria and the interview process. However we were able to assist Stella to complete the selection criteria and go over mock interview questions with her. The following day she was called in for a panel interview and was very excited to be in the running for the position,” Rachel said.

Stella said she was very thankful for the support she had received from Rachel and BUSY At Work’s Community Services Recruitment Officer, Janet Emerton.

“When I first came into the Busy Beat hub I wasn’t sure if I was qualified to do anything. Janet gave me great assistance with my resume and the constant help and support I received from Rachel has been above and beyond what I could have imagined.”

“With the support I have received I now feel confident in operating a computer, completing online applications and attending job interviews,” Stella said.

BUSY At Work has a Busy Beat hub based in Southport and one at Ipswich with the Southport hub opening in January 2013. BUSY’s Career Pathways Officers at the hub help local job seekers prepare themselves for entry or re-entry into the workforce.

Job seekers have access to a range of services including pre employment training, assistance with resume writing, interview preparation, and job search advice as well as a range of workshops to help people reach their full potential.

BUSY At Work, CEO Paul Miles said the staff at Busy Beat hubs do a tremendous job in helping people like Stella reengage with the workforce.
