Sunshine Coast University Hospital provides employment boost

The Queensland employment sector received a boost this week, with the state premier announcing the commencement of work on a major construction project.

Up to 2,000 jobs will be created during the construction phase of the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) – the first non-replacement hospital to be built in Australia in more than two decades – providing the local economy a major boost with more employment opportunities for Queenslanders.

Visiting the site yesterday (September 26), Campbell Newman said the new medical facility will provide vital health services to the growing region.

He explained: “When the hospital opens in 2016, it will provide a range of vital healthcare services that are currently unavailable locally.

“This will mean that approximately 10,000 local residents each year will no longer have to travel to Brisbane to receive important medical services.”

SCUH will provide local residents a range of state-of-the-art services including access to a comprehensive cancer centre, as well as neurosurgery, cardiothoracic, maxillofacial surgeries and trauma care.

Providing employment for more than 3,500 staff and expanding to 6,000 employees by 2021, the hospital will accommodate up to 900 patients.
