Tailoring your resume to achieve results

It is vital to tailor a resume to a specific job.

In uncertain economic conditions job hunting can be a challenging process for even the most qualified professional.

Your resume is the first glimpse a prospective employer will get of an individual so it makes sense then to spend time on this important document to make sure it stands out from the rest.

Whether you are looking for your first job or a complete career change, it is vital that you tailor your resume to the position you are applying for.

When creating your resume, think about it from an employer’s perspective – instead of just listing your achievements it is important to display them in a way that will make an employer see the benefit for their business.

Think about what achievements – big and small – you have made in your career to date, and include the ones that a prospective employer would be interested in.

When listing your successes it is important to not just bullet point without an explanation. For example, if you say that you have improved productivity by ten per cent, it is vital to explain how you achieved this with anecdotal evidence.

Lastly, think about your resume as an advertisement or a pamphlet selling yourself. Always look at it from the eyes of someone else and consider whether you are conveyed attractively in it.

Providing hard evidence of your attributes, skills and achievements is essential both in person and on paper.
