Queensland WorldSkills team prepares for national competition

Queensland's best trainees and apprentices are heading to Sydney for the national WorldSkills competition.

The Queensland government has applauded the state’s best apprentices and trainees in the lead-up to the country’s biggest skills competition which kicks-off tomorrow (August 30).

Wishing the contenders good luck, state minister for education, training and employment John-Paul Langbroek said the state’s 82 competitors ranged in age between 16 and 23, with more than 10 school-based apprentices and trainees part taking part in the national contest.

“Congratulations to our highly skilled team of apprentices and trainees, who all won top honours in regional WorldSkills competitions across the state last year,” Mr Langbroek explained.

“They will now go on to showcase their skills on the national stage, in more than 50 categories, spanning from traditional trades such as bricklaying to more contemporary professions like computer programming.”

The WorldSkills Australia National Competition starts in Sydney tomorrow and will run until September 1 coinciding with the National Skills Week, which runs until September 2.

Mr Langbroek said the competition was not only an opportunity for the country’s best trainees and apprentices, it also played a vital role in encouraging more young Queenslanders to build their skills through vocational programs.

“It is important to encourage young people to keep building on what they know and given them clear avenues to build their vocational skills at school and beyond,” he added.
