Supporting Small Business: Tracey Jones Photography

A woman with dark hair tied back, turquoise sunglasses on her head and a TGJ PHOTOGRAPHY shirt, smiling outdoors with support by BUSY at Work.

How one inspired creator turned her passion into a thriving business.

With help and support by BUSY at Work, a person in a black shirt and grey shorts kneels barefoot on a rocky beach, photographing the ocean.

Nestled in the stunning tropical paradise of Port Douglas, Queensland, Tracey Jones Photography is more than just a business — it’s a creative hub for photography lovers. Tracey offers guided photography tours, private lessons, and fine art prints, available both online and at local markets. Her passion for sharing knowledge shines through in her educational photography books, written for hobbyists eager to improve their skills.

From Underwater Adventures to Entrepreneurship

Tracey’s journey began over a decade ago as an underwater photographer in South-East Asia.

“When I first had the chance to teach photography, something just clicked. I realised I loved helping people learn just as much as taking photos myself. From that moment, I knew starting my own business was the path for me.”

Like many aspiring entrepreneurs, Tracey needed guidance, clarity and support. That’s when she discovered Self-Employment Assistance, a Government-funded Workforce Australia program designed to help new and existing business owners build confidence, skills and long-term success.

What is Self-Employment Assistance?

The program provides:

  • One-on-one mentoring with an experienced business advisor
  • Business skills training to strengthen foundations
  • Potential financial assistance, if eligible, while getting established

For Tracey, having a mentor was a game-changer:

“Having access to a mentor has been incredibly valuable. I’ve had someone to bounce ideas off, someone who challenges me, and someone who keeps me focused and accountable.”

Overcoming Challenges

Like any business owner, Tracey faced hurdles,  time and money being the biggest. But with targeted training and mentoring, she learned to work smarter, market effectively, and focus on what matters most.

“Marketing didn’t feel natural at first, but with guidance and persistence, the results started to come.”

The Rewards

Tracey’s greatest satisfaction comes from her customers:

“Seeing people come back for lessons or tours, and hearing someone say, ‘Now I finally get it,’ is incredibly fulfilling.”

Her advice for anyone thinking about starting a business?

“Don’t wait until you feel ready — just start. Take small steps, stay consistent, and trust that you’ll figure it out along the way.”
