$10.4m Mooloolaba Road project to provide ‘critical’ safety improvements

Work will begin to improve the safety of Mooloolaba Road in the Sunshine Coast.

Construction is set to begin on the $10.4 million safety improvements on Mooloolaba Road at Buderim hill, aimed at reducing the area’s high crash rate and improving driveability for motorists.

There were 54 crashes on this section of road between 2006-12, with drainage issues, the steep grade and insufficient visibility providing challenging driving conditions.

As part of the multi-million dollar safety improvements, an “innovative” half-a-bout will be constructed.

Member for Buderim Steve Dickson said the half-a-bout will provide “maximum convenience” to motorists, which was one of the priorities raised in a recent community consultation.

“Eastbound access will be provided for movements out of Nyes Crescent and with all traffic movements currently available at Panorama Crescent to be maintained,” Mr Dickson said.

“This construction will assist in reducing crash risks at the busy intersection and will provide a convenient U-turn facility for westbound motorists, as well as being useful for motorists exiting Nyes Crescent and wishing to travel east.”

He adds that the half-a-bout also takes up less room than a standard roundabout, fitting into the available road space.

This project may provide opportunities for apprenticeships in the Sunshine Coast, with works to begin at the end of the month until late 2014 (weather permitting).
