New Toowoomba city library to be completed in 2015

Plans for the new Toowoomba city library were revealed last week (July 16).

Plans for Toowoomba’s new city library were unveiled by the regional council on July 16, revealing the location of the library and civic square.

The new building will be constructed on land behind the City Hall, with 2,600 square metres dedicated to library services and another 1,000 square metres for community meeting rooms and other facilities.

There will also be 99 basement car spaces to be used by visitors to the library, community meeting rooms, City Hall and civic square.

Library and Cultural Services portfolio leader Ros Scotney said a key feature of the new building will be having the entire library on a single level.

“This will be a major change from our current library and will allow patrons and staff to use the library spaces more easily,” Cr Scotney said.

“In designing the internal layout of this area, we will ensure we have maximum flexibility so they can be used by many different groups in the community. For example, this could include corporate or volunteer groups for meetings, but also more creative uses such as arts, crafts or music.”

These new developments could also signal opportunities for those interested in pursuing apprenticeships in Toowoomba.

Last Thursday (July 18), local government minister David Crisafulli said that $100,000 will be put toward building gardens, pathways and lighting to celebrate the centenary of Newtown Park.

A commemorative plaque and feature seat will also be constructed as a central feature, based on the park’s original plan from the 1930s.
