Action plan to reform Queensland’s education and training sector released

A new program aimed at supporting Queenslanders with the skills training needed to get a job was recently announced by the state’s minister for Education, Training and Employment John-paul Langbroek.

The Great Skills. Real Opportunities. program aims to improve the skills sector, with reforms including giving every Year 12 graduate an “extra incentive” to enrol in high priority qualifications by offering fee-free training if they start with a preferred training provider within a year of leaving school.

The initiative will also provide more opportunities for apprenticeships in Queensland, with the state government committing an extra $86 million over six years to create an additional 10,000 apprentice and trainee commencements.

The state government says that apprentices and trainees will be supported to take up new employment opportunities, so that Queensland’s trade training can keep pace with industry and employer demand.

To make trade training more “accessible, flexible and relevant” the government will provide more support for apprentices and trainees in regional areas and encourage improvement of literacy and numeracy skills with a $5 million government support program, among other initiatives.
