Bundaberg flood recovery efforts to benefit local builders

Bundaberg contractors should be prepared for a flurry of employment opportunities as flood recovery efforts power ahead in the region.

Master Builders regional manager Michael Hopkins said local builders are well positioned to take advantage of major projects underway and scheduled in the region.

The expert went on to say that many companies were frustrated that they missed out on initial emergency repairs, however, there would be several more opportunities as Bundaberg rebuilds itself – potentially boosting apprenticeships in Queensland as a result.

“It is common practice for insurance companies to bring in their own panel of builders to manage the rebuilding process after a natural disaster, and often these are from outside the region,” Mr Hopkins explained.

“Our advice to local builders is to be patient and keep an eye out for opportunities, whether these are smaller jobs or ongoing non-insurance work that comes out of this first round of repairs.”

Mr Hopkins said in the long-term, Bundaberg’s construction sector would directly benefit from flood repairs as more and more people turn to local service providers.

His comments come after a report from Construction Skills Queensland forecast building expenditure in the Sunshine State is tipped to increase 51 per cent over the next decade.
