BUSY At Work Combat Youth Unemployment with Army of Apprentices

Gold Coast based organisation BUSY At Work has helped to combat the challenge of youth unemployment on the Gold Coast by unleashing an army of 111 apprentices and trainees into the workforce.

BUSY At Work CEO Paul Miles and the Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills Karen Andrews have today announced the successful outcome of the 2017 GC101 program.

The GC101 program – that took place during the final 6 weeks of 2017 – aimed to provide over 100 jobs to Gold Coast school leavers and youth via apprenticeships and traineeships.

BUSY At Work CEO Paul Miles said that schemes such as GC101 are vital in the fight to tackle the crippling effects of youth unemployment.

“At a time when youth unemployment on the Gold Coast is nearly 10 per cent, programs need to be in place to combat the challenge of youth unemployment,” Mr Miles said.

“The 2017 GC101 has successfully delivered work for 111 apprentices and trainees, with a further 193 school-based students also signed up.

“This positive outcome has secured the futures of over 100 Gold Coast youngsters, who will form the next generation of small business owners on the coast.

“BUSY At Work would like to thank all Gold Coast businesses who supported the program and who have helped to unleash an army of over 100 Gold Coast youngsters into the workforce.

Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills and Gold Coast federal MP, Karen Andrews, congratulated those behind the GC101 campaign on its success.

“It’s great to see over a hundred local young people on the path to a great job and career through an apprenticeship,” Mrs Andrews said.

“We know that university is not for everyone and this campaign has highlighted just how many opportunities are available for those who choose to take the vocational education and training path.

“The Gold Coast needs more skilled workers across a number of industries, particularly hospitality and tourism that are so important to our local economy,” Mrs Andrews said.

“I strongly encourage those entering their final years of school to look at all options that will lead to a great job and career, including apprenticeships.”
