Galilee Transmission proposes $300m open access power line to power mine

Galilee Transmission Pty Ltd (GTC) has proposed a plan to construct a major transmission line to power central Queensland’s Carmichael coal mine – a move that has been welcomed by Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney.

Mr Seeney met with Adani Group executives in India this week and said that the development of the transmission line will remove a “major barrier” to the opening of other resource and commercial activities in the central Galilee Basin.

The project proposes the creation of a 250km transmission line which would link Powerlink Queensland’s Strathmore substation to the new Galilee substation on Moray Downs, located just 10km east of the proposed Carmichael mine.

“Adani proposes spending in excess of $7 billion on the [Carmichael] coal mine operations and accompanying rail, port, water and power infrastructure,” Mr Seeney said.

“Adani has forecast the mining of some 60 million tonnes of thermal coal a year from open-cut and underground mining operations from 2022.

The project may also bring opportunities for apprenticeships in Queensland, as it could employ up to 2,500 workers during construction and up to 2,940 employees when it’s operational, Mr Seeney said.
