QLD construction industry ‘thriving’

Queensland’s construction sector continues to boom, with recent data showing it is the state’s largest employer.

According to the latest RBS Morgans study, one in five Queenslanders is likely to be employed as a builder – a reflection of thriving conditions in the field at present.

The report, released yesterday (February 25), showed that health care and social assistance is the second biggest supporter of employment, with it accounting for 170,500 permanent jobs.

And in testament to the state’s robust mining resources sector, mining supports 71,000 full time positions, with it recording the second highest lift of 31,000 new jobs over the past five years, The Courier-Mail reports.

With the construction industry enjoying record levels of activity, opportunities for apprenticeships in Queensland may benefit from positive conditions in the field.

The latest job data comes after the latest Construction Skills Construction (CSQ) report forecast a decline in major projects over the next four years, however, it stated activity would still remain historically high.

Published by BIS Shrapnel, the research also noted that engineering construction will record significant growth over the next few years.

Queensland Reconstruction Authority chief executive officer Graeme Newton said flood recovery projects will also support more than 15,000 jobs through to 2014.
