Queensland schools receive $100m boost

Queensland schools will undergo major upgrades thanks to a government initiative.

Opportunities for apprenticeships in Queensland may receive a boost thanks to the state government’s $100 million commitment to the education sector.

Premier Campbell Newman said the multimillion-dollar initiative, which is in addition to the existing $200 million pledge in last year’s budget, will support major upgrades to schools across the state.

The fiscal aid is part of the Fixing Our Schools Fund and will provide education institutions with up to $160,000 to carry out vital maintenance.

“With their funding schools have been able to fix footpaths, repair guttering and replace carpet,” Mr Newman explained.

“Within a year, my government will have funded 700 schools to completely clear their maintenance backlogs.”

With many schools likely to undertake vital upgrades under the funding scheme, the local construction industry may reap the benefits of increased activity in the field.

Minister for education, training and employment John-Paul Langbroek said investing in Queensland schools was a government priority, with the previous government creating a $292 million maintenance backlog.

He added: “Thanks to the Newman government, Queensland schools will once again be a place of pride for students to learn, teachers to teach and communities to gather.”
