Three things to keep in mind when applying for a job

Do you have pictures of last night’s party posted on your Facebook for everyone to see? How about your Twitter page – can anyone access your tweets?

While it’s not a crime to have social media page – it’s the digital age after all! – your pics at the pub and expletive-ridden tweets can put somewhat of a dampener on your chances of employment.

If you’re currently looking at apprenticeships in Queensland, and are busy handing your CV around and conducting interviews then make sure to note down these top things to keep in mind.

Your online presence

It’s possible to learn about what TV shows people are loving, where they went in the weekend and even what they wore on their wedding day – simply by looking at their social media pages.

Many employers make it a habit now to type the names of job applicants in social engines such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to gauge the type of person they are.

This doesn’t mean that you have to completely delete your pages, just ensure that you have your pages set on private!

It’s not that hard to do, with Facebook providing a simple guide to help make sure that it is only your friends and family seeing your statuses, photos and videos.

Ensure you have all the content you don’t want your potential employer to see hidden away by using the privacy options offered by Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Format of your documents

The format of your document is probably one thing that you don’t really think about when emailing through your CV and cover letter, but sometimes this can make the difference between you getting a job interview or not getting a callback?

Microsoft Office Word is a widely accepted format that is often preferred by employers, rather than using other lesser known word processing software.

You want to ensure that the employer can open and access your documents, so checking the format of your CV and cover letter is highly recommended.

PDF is also a widely accepted format, so you can choose to send your documents in this way also.

‘Do you have any questions for me?’

This is often the last question of your job interview, and it’s a vital one too. ALWAYS aim to ask at least one question of the employer. This shows that you are interested in the company and what they do, demonstrating your enthusiasm for the role.
