Works begin on second phase of Highland Road upgrade

Construction has kicked off on the second phase of the Highfields Road upgrade, with the major project expected to wrap by the end of the year, weather permitting.

Toowoomba Regional Council Infrastructure Committee Chair Carol Taylor said the $1.2 million stage 1 works between Rogers Drive and Mather Street included widening sealed road shoulders, the reconstruction of the existing two lanes, improved pavement and storm water drainage, and an upgrade of lighting and pedestrian facilities.

This road project could create opportunities for apprenticeships in Toowoomba, with pavement work scheduled to begin in mid-October.

Ms Taylor said a single lane of traffic will be allowed when possible on Highfields Road in the next work stage.

“Two-way access will be maintained using traffic lights where possible. When this is not possible, westbound traffic will be directed through the work site via a one-way lane.

She adds that motorists are encouraged to use different routes including Kleinton, Reis, Polzin or O’Brien Roads to avoid the construction area.
