As the latest ambassador for BUSY At Work’s GC101 campaign, Max Hall has always had a passion for food so it’s not surprising to hear him talking enthusiastically about where this passion might take him in the future.

“With cooking you learn so many things you can take into your everyday life. When you get home from work it’s reassuring to know that you have the skills to cook something really nice.”

“You can have small family dinners where you can cook for everyone and they all really appreciate the hard work you put in to make something special for them.”

“Ideally I would like to go into the pastry side of cooking, as well as learn about cooking in other cultures.”

“Once you have the qualification, cooking can take you all over the world and maybe one day I might even get the chance to work for a famous chef,” Max enthused.

Now working as second year commercial cookery apprentice at Kurrawa Surf Club, the 18 year old is relishing the opportunity to learn new skills as well as playing a key role as one of six inaugural ambassadors for the GC101 campaign.

Since starting his apprenticeship Max has been learning how to prepare a variety of foods including paella, linguine and falafel in a fast paced kitchen environment.

“I get to work across the breakfast, lunch and dinner shifts as well as the occasional function so there is always a lot to learn.”
Max was very appreciative of the support he had received from the chefs and other apprentices at the surf club.

“While we all have our differences, at the end of the day we are one big team who are all ready to help each other out.”

“I really enjoy the camaraderie and the fact that every day there is something new to learn,” Max said.

Having previously been a school based apprentice, Max is keen to get behind BUSY At Work’s GC101 campaign.

“Right from the start BUSY were very supportive and always there if I needed assistance with anything.”

“Taking on an apprenticeship is a great way to gain a qualification and it makes getting a job anywhere in the world that little bit easier,” Max added.

Kurrawa Surf Club Human Resource Manager, Tracey Gardner said the club was committed to taking on new apprentices and help grow the business.

“We have a very busy venue and our new club will be opening this month. We currently do up to 1,000 meals a day so it is important for our apprentices to learn all sections of the kitchen.”

“Being a multicultural kitchen it’s essential for all the staff to get along and Max has fitted in extremely well in the team.”

“There is always that bit of extra pressure when cooking for large numbers but Max has shown himself to be very capable and is a wonderful ambassador for new apprentices wanting to learn the trade.”

“We have worked closely with BUSY At Work for several years and they have always made the process for hiring an apprentice very easy for us,” Ms Gardner said.

BUSY At Work, Managing Director Paul Miles urged local businesses to get behind the new GC101 Apprenticeship campaign and take on a new apprentice or trainee.

“With an ageing population it is very important that young people have the opportunity to contribute their skills and talents to the labour market.”

“By taking on an apprentice or trainee through BUSY At Work, businesses can encourage young people to learn new skills and make it easier for them to enter the workforce.”

“As specialists in apprenticeship support services BUSY At Work can provide businesses with all the relevant information regarding Australian Apprenticeships and what Government Incentive Programs are available,” Mr Miles said.
