It’s been a whirlwind three months for Sous Chef Quentin Roper since he first connected with BUSY At Work Job Placement Officer Noosaville, Kimberley Goodwin.
During that time Quentin’s passion for work has grown in leaps and bounds to the point where he now has a secure full time job and is confident in his future.
Kimberley said Quentin had shown great determination and resilience after being many years out of work.
When Andersyn Landt started doing general cleaning and gardening at the Mackay and District Australian South Sea Islander Association (MADASSIA) centre as a participant in a Working for the Dole (WfD) activity, she never imagined it might lead to a possible future career in the administration field.
As well as developing her Microsoft Office skills and assisting with office clerical duties Andersyn is also studying for her Certificate III in Business Administration which she hopes to complete by the end of the year.
The $20,000 Youth Boost payment has been an integral part of the government’s $100 million Back to Work Program which has seen 2,323 Queenslanders employed by 1,090 regional businesses.
The Youth Boost payment is specifically targeted towards employers who hire unemployed youth aged between 15 to 24 in the eligible regions of Far North Queensland, North Queensland, Mackay/Whitsunday, Central Queensland, Wide Bay Burnett North West and South West.
BUSY At Work CEO, Paul Miles said the extension of the Youth Boost payment will allow more regional businesses to take on young unemployed youth.
Mackay local Darien Andrews is positive proof that being a participant in a Working for the Dole (WfD) program can be a meaningful and life changing experience.
The 21 year old signed up for a Work for the Dole activity at the Pioneer Tennis Club in September last year and is relishing the opportunity to learn new business skills in an office environment.
BUSY At Work, Work for the Dole Coordinator, Kristy Gostelow said Darien had performed so well at the club that he was offered a traineeship on 30 January this year and is now studying for his Certificate III in Business.
“The Pioneer Tennis Club is a not-for-profit organisation and was not able to provide the resources needed to keep up with the day-to-day running of the office.”
The State Government today announced they have extended their offer of $20,000 for employers hiring staff aged between 15 and 24 years in regional Queensland for another eight months.
The $20,000 Youth Boost payment is specifically targeted towards employers who hire unemployed youth aged between 15 to 24 during the eligibility period between 1 December 2016 and now extended to 31 October 2017 (inclusive).
Payments are available for apprenticeships and traineeships where the employer is not eligible for Queensland’s Apprentice Trainee rebate for payroll tax.

During that time Juan’s confidence has grown in leaps and bounds to the point where he now has a part time job and is well on the way to completing his Certificate III in Hospitality.
Such is his remarkable progress Juan has now been nominated for the Queensland Training Awards 2017 Equity VET (Vocational Education and Training) Student of the Year Award. The award recognises people who have overcome significant barriers or disadvantage to effective participation in vocational education and training.
In September last year Daniel Newell was at a low point in his life. With a wife and two children to support, the future was looking very uncertain with Daniel unable to secure regular work to make ends meet.
After connecting with Jason Meyer, BUSY At Work’s Job Placement Officer for Smithfield, Mareeba and Atherton, Daniel was able to turn his life around and is now working full time in a new career which is not only financially rewarding but one he is passionate about.
In the lead up to meeting Jason, Daniel had been unemployed for two years and in his own words he had become “very discouraged with what the universe had thrown at him.
Seventeen year old Nioka Watson has always demonstrated a natural affiliation with young children so it comes as no surprise that she has fitted in extremely well at the Little Scholars School of Early Learning in Stapylton.
A recent graduate of the five week program which targets job seekers aged between 15 and 24, and Indigenous and disadvantaged job seekers, Joshua has proved to be an excellent student and his determination to succeed is now paying dividends.
Before entering the program Joshua had not been able to secure employment and despite not having been employed for over a year, nothing could hold him back.
Lachlan only has to look to his boss, Jeremy Scanlan for inspiration on where his carpentry apprenticeship might take him. Jeremy commenced his own school-based apprenticeship in 2008 and is now a Director of Toowoomba based Golding Homes.
