What is an Apprenticeship / Traineeship?

In Australia, this learning opportunity combines formal study and paid on the job training while achieving a nationally recognised qualification. Undertaking this learning pathway enables you to gain skills that can be applied practically in your career of choice while furthering your education. These qualifications can be anything from a Certificate II to an advanced diploma.

Are you Eligible?

There is quite a lot of flexibility with eligibility, with some students commencing in years 10, 11 and 12 with a school-based arrangement. Alternatively, you have already left school or may be an adult looking at a change of career.

To undertake an opportunity like this, you are required to be:

  • of working age
  • an Australian citizen
  • a permanent resident or
  • a NZ passport holder or
  • have a Visa that allows you to work in Australia

How long will an Apprenticeship or Traineeship take?

To complete on the job training and study, undertaking your study full-time will take anywhere between 12-24 months for a Traineeship and 36-48 months for an Apprenticeship, but it very much depends on each individual and how quickly competencies can be completed. We recommend getting in touch with our team to learn more about the duration expected for your program and what will be expected of you.

Payment and Financial Standards

Under the National Employment Standards, you are entitled to receive a fair wage, and a list of awards will show what is legally required. The award will give you information about:

  • Base rates
  • Overtime and penalty rates
  • Work arrangements
  • Superannuation
  • Salary arrangements
  • And so much more.
